The Underwriting Operations Manager oversees the operational support functions of the underwriting department, ensuring efficient policy processing, strong quality standards, and scalable workflows across multiple states. This role leads underwriting support teams, drives process improvement initiatives, and partners closely with underwriting leadership to enhance operational performance.


Reporting directly to the Executive Vice President, the Underwriting Operations Manager plays a key role in improving operational efficiency, supporting underwriting productivity, and developing a high-performing team.


Your Responsibilities

  • Direct and lead operational teams including the Underwriting Supervisor, Policy Services, and File department staff
  • Establish performance expectations and provide coaching, training, and development to team members
  • Partner with underwriting leadership to ensure operational processes support underwriting objectives
  • Support cross-department collaboration between underwriting, claims, casualty, marketing, and executive leadership
  • Manage daily underwriting operations to ensure accurate and timely policy processing
  • Enhance workflow, productivity, and quality standards across underwriting operations
  • Develop and implement operational improvements to increase efficiency and service quality
  • Develop and analyze operational metrics to monitor performance and drive process improvements
  • Manage the relationship with the policy administration system vendor, including system enhancements, workflow automation, and operational improvements
  • Ensure compliance with company policies, internal procedures, and regulatory requirements across all jurisdictions
  • Develop accurate and effective responses to regulatory complaints and represent underwriting in market conduct examinations

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree (4 years) at an accredited college/university required
  • 5+ years of experience in insurance operations, underwriting support, or underwriting administration
  • 2+ years of people leadership or supervisory experience
  • Strong knowledge of automobile insurance underwriting operations and policy processing
  • Experienced managing workflow, operational performance and productivity metrics
  • Highly organized with proven problem-solving, and decision-making skills
  • Excellent oral/written communication skills and leadership abilities
  • Experience with insurance systems and operational reporting preferred
