San Diego Symphony performances include the Masterworks series, offering traditional classical repertoire and featuring such guest artists as Yefim Bronfman, Joshua Bell, Jon Kimura Parker and Kathleen Battle; the Winter Pops series, featuring popular guest artists such as Michael Feinstein, Jennifer Holliday, Ben Vereen, Robert Klein and Principal Pops Conductor Marvin Hamlisch as well as annual holiday programs; a Family Festival series that presents family-friendly concerts; and Symphony Exposed, a fascinating series of concerts examining closely great works of classical music from entertaining and thought-provoking angles, hosted by Nuvi Mehta. Each year, from July through September, the Symphony presents an outdoor Summer Pops season at Embarcadero Marina Park South. Summer Pops mixes classical favorites and pop music in a festive, outdoor atmosphere on San Diego’s picturesque waterfront.

General Summary:


The Seasonal Artistic Assistant provides support within the Artistic Department for performances at Jacobs Music Center, The Rady Shell at Jacobs Park, and other venues as needed.


Essential Responsibilities: 


-- Support the Artistic Department, primarily in Artist and Tour servicing areas such as: 

  • ensuring dressing rooms are stocked and configured per rider specifications, 
  • guaranteeing artistic supplies are kept clean and in order (may include towel laundering as needed), and,
  • rehearsal and concert duty,
  • facilitation of ancillary tour needs such as merchandise sales setup and VIP experiences.

-- Assist with light running duties which may include: 

  • transporting artists in the Symphony’s golf carts, and 
  • running errands around our venues and town (mileage will be reimbursed if personal vehicles are used). 

-- Perform administrative duties such as: 

  • chaperoning artists for private practice needs, 
  • recording and disseminating meeting notes,
  • scheduling meetings and calls,
  • making reservations for travel or dining needs,
  • shopping for hospitality items, 
  • coding expense reports,
  • preparing itineraries and other documents,
  • proofreading written materials, and
  • performing personnel management tasks such as data entry and document filing.

-- Utilize ArtsVision, our artistic planning software, as needed to assist with itineraries and other planning tasks.

-- Other duties as assigned. 

Requirements

Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, Abilities): 

  • Experience in customer service is preferred.
  • Musical training and experience (instrumental or vocal) is preferred.
  • Must have adaptability and a willingness to take direction.
  • Must take initiative in navigating time-sensitive situations.
  • Ability to be comfortable and confident in meeting and conversing with new people, given the diverse and ever-changing touring personnel encountered.

General Requirements: 

  • A valid driver's license.
  • Must meet state minimum age for purchasing alcoholic beverages (21 years of age). 
  • Regular, pre-determined attendance for numerous evening and weekend work shifts when scheduled. 
  • Availability to work regular business hours, in addition to nights, weekends, and overtime as required for concert coverage.

Working Conditions: 

  • Work locations will be indoors and outdoors dependent on tasks at hand. 
  • Normal office working conditions: sitting at a desk and computer terminal for long periods of time, typing and computer work, light to moderate lifting.
  • Normal backstage working conditions: standing for long periods of time, light to moderate lifting, noisy atmosphere.
