Reports to the Program Manager. The Youth and Family Caseworker will work in partnership with other Caseworkers and the Recovery Alberta Clinical Team to support youth and their families with acute mental health conditions. The Caseworker uses the Wellness Model to encourage a healthy lifestyle by utilizing community supports and recreational participation. As a member of the YCSP team, your primary responsibility is to provide youth and families with the supports necessary to meet their treatment and mental wellness goals.

Position Responsibilities

  • Coordinate with a multidisciplinary team to support youth with acute mental health challenges and their families.
  • Utilize a harm-reduction and strength-based approach to develop and enhance support systems.
  • Practice and co-facilitate DBT (Dialectical Behavioural Therapy) with youth and caregivers.
  • Assist with case documentation, including treatment plans, safety plans, and case conceptualizations.
  • Participate in staff meetings, case conferences, and team discussions.
  • Provide crisis intervention and develop comprehensive safety plans.
  • Support Family Counselors with DBT material and casework deliverables.
  • Respect and address cultural needs of program participants.
  • Assist in life skills development to promote independence (e.g., emotional regulation, healthy relationships).
  • Build positive relationships with community agencies and partners.
  • Maintain a caseload of 6-8 participants.
  • Attend cultural and Indigenous trainings as required.
  • Ensure compliance with program procedures and accreditation standards.
  • All other duties as outlined by program manager.
  • All staff at BSCS are expected to participate in occasional outreach and emergency response efforts (e.g., winter response) to support and engage with clients.
  • BSCS is more than a workplace. It is a community where everyone helps and contributes to the whole, and there is an expectation that all employees will take part in events (during the work week and occasionally during weekends and evenings). This includes fundraising campaigns, running community meals, medicine picking etc.

Qualifications

  • Post Secondary Degree in a relevant field (Human Services, Social Work) and/or relevant work experience
  • Understanding of harm-reduction, client-focused, and strength-based practices 
  • Excellent knowledge and understanding of poverty related issues, trends, and services particularly, but not limited to the urban aboriginal population is essential 
  • Current ASIST certification is considered and is also an asset
  • Police Check with the Vulnerable Sector and Child and Youth Intervention Check completed within the past six months
  • Valid First Aid certificate or enrolled in a future course
  • Valid Class 5 Non-GDL license and access to a reliable vehicle
