About the Role

Position Overview

We are seeking an experienced Ophthalmic Technician III to serve as a dedicated ophthalmologist screening and testing technician within our patient care team. This role is responsible for performing comprehensive pre-exam screenings and advanced diagnostic testing to ensure the ophthalmologist receives accurate, complete, and timely clinical information for patient evaluation and treatment planning.

The ideal candidate is a Certified Ophthalmic Assistant (COA), Certified Ophthalmic Technician (COT), or possesses equivalent experience, with strong clinical skills, sound judgment, and the ability to work efficiently in a high-volume ophthalmology setting. This position plays a critical role in clinical flow, physician efficiency, and overall patient experience.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities

Ophthalmologist Screening & Clinical Workup

  • Perform comprehensive ophthalmic pre-exam screenings in accordance with provider preferences and clinical protocols.
  • Obtain, verify, and document complete medical, ocular, and surgical histories, including chief complaints and symptom progression.
  • Measure and document visual acuity, intraocular pressure, and refractions, and basic motility, pupil, and CVF assessments.
  • Perform refraction and retinoscopy as indicated to support clinical assessment.
  • Prepare patients for physician examination, including administering diagnostic drops and dilation per protocol.

 

Diagnostic Testing & Imaging

  • Perform advanced ophthalmic diagnostic testing, including but not limited to:
    • Visual field testing (Humphrey Visual Field)
    • Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT)
    • Fundus photography
    • Corneal topography
    • A/B-scan ultrasound
    • Applanation tonometry
  • Perform all diagnostic testing as ordered by the physician.
  • Ensure all ordered testing is completed accurately prior to physician evaluation.
  • Identify and promptly communicate abnormal findings, changes in visual acuity, or urgent concerns to the ophthalmologist.

 

Documentation & Clinical Accuracy

  • Accurately and thoroughly document all screening data, test results, and procedures in the electronic health record (EHR).
  • Review patient charts to confirm completeness of testing and readiness for physician examination.
  • Maintain attention to detail to support diagnostic accuracy and continuity of care.

 

Patient Education & Experience

  • Explain screening and testing procedures clearly to patients to ensure understanding and cooperation.
  • Provide patient education regarding prescribed medications, eye drops, and contact lenses as directed by the provider.
  • Maintain a professional, compassionate, and patient-centered approach at all times.

 

Workflow, Prioritization & Communication

  • Efficiently manage daily assignments while maintaining clinic flow and physician readiness.
  • Navigate and complete assigned tasks, including voicemails, patient messages, prescription refill requests, faxes, and prior authorizations.
  • Communicate effectively with physicians, technicians, and leadership regarding patient status, testing needs, and workflow concerns.

 

 

Equipment, Safety & Inventory

  • Clean, maintain, and calibrate ophthalmic equipment in accordance with infection control and safety standards.
  • Troubleshoot basic equipment issues and escalate concerns as needed.
  • Monitor exam room and testing area supplies; notify appropriate personnel when inventory is low or depleted.
  • Ensure compliance with HIPAA, OSHA, and all applicable clinical safety standards.

 

Professional Development & Leadership Support

  • Stay current on ophthalmic screening techniques, diagnostic testing advancements, and clinical best practices.
  • Serve as a clinical resource for training or mentoring to less experienced technicians when appropriate.
  • Participate in training sessions, team meetings, and quality improvement initiatives.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.


Qualifications

  • COA or COT certification preferred; equivalent ophthalmic screening and testing experience required.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in ophthalmologist pre-exam screening and advanced diagnostic testing.
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to prioritize in a fast-paced clinical environment.
  • Excellent communication, documentation, and patient interaction skills.
  • Ability to travel to satellite clinic locations as needed.
  • Availability to work Monday through Friday, with rotating Saturdays required.
