Summary

The person holding this position is responsible for preparing curriculum and providing instruction in the English department — a dynamic and highly collaborative work environment where team teaching is part of the department culture and an expectation of the position. Collectively, the department seeks to create meaningful and equitable learning spaces where students have choice and agency over mastery of English concepts.


Responsibilities and Duties

Teaching: Typical assignments will include teaching four sections of English, two of which are team-taught classes, preparing course objectives and course of study following departmental guidelines and curriculum, conducting varied and frequent assessments of student performance, utilizing appropriate technology in the classroom setting, keeping attendance and grade records as required by school, writing individual grade and comment reports six times a year with additional progress reports as assigned, maintaining regularly scheduled office hours for help sessions with students, attending faculty meetings and professional development opportunities provided by the school.


Residential: This position will participate in all aspects of the school including participation in our student life program which includes advisory to a group of students, chaperoning student activities, and student support.


Co-Curricular: All faculty members will participate in a co-curricular within our experiential program. Participation will prioritize athletics coaching, with alternatives including community engagement, outdoor education, or arts assignments.  Current needs: soccer, tennis, volleyball, wrestling, basketball, track and field (especially field events), diving, field hockey.


Communication: Communicating positively and proactively with students, advisers, parents, colleagues, and administration in a professional manner in both oral and written form.


Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Experience teaching adolescents and enjoys working with and relates well to both adults and students, is collaborative, and communicates well. 
  • Thrive in a fast-paced, team-oriented work environment and should be open to co-teaching with colleagues.
  • Exceptional organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Possess excellent technology skills. 
  • The English department member holds a full-time faculty position and two-thirds of the faculty position is devoted to teaching English.  
  • The English department member carries out additional responsibilities such as residential and/or co-curricular assignments. 
  • Flexible and adaptable to meet the needs of an ever-changing boarding school environment.
  • A disciplined, results-oriented, self-starter, demonstrating initiative and the ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Outstanding listening and analytical skills.

  • Environment: Work is performed in an indoor/office environment where the noise level ranges from quiet to moderate. 
  • Physical: Primary functions require sufficient physical ability and mobility to climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, reach, stand, walk, push, pull, lift, using repetitive motions; may frequently lift up 20 lbs. or up to 10 pounds constantly and occasionally up to 50 lbs.; to travel in all modes of transportation; sufficient manual dexterity and eye-hand coordination to grasp, finger, and feel.  
  • Vision: See in the normal visual range with or without correction. 
  • Hearing: Hear in the normal audio range with or without correction.

Requirements

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree
  • Extensive expertise in technology applications, including use of a MacBook Pro, Google Workspace, and iPad for teaching purposes 
  • Proficiency in research techniques
  • Prior experience in teaching English and curriculum development preferred
  • A valid driver’s license
