Overview:

Assistant Controller oversees all aspects of the month-end close process, including balance sheet account reconciliation review, journal entry review & approval, cross-functional coordination, and financial reporting and analysis. This role is responsible for maintaining (and supporting) the accuracy and integrity of financial records and ensuring the timely completion of the month-end close process. This role will have two direct reports and is required to be at the office for a minimum of three days a week. 


Position Responsibilities:

  • Establish and enhance departmental structure, policies, standard operating procedures, and reporting deadlines.
  • Lead and oversee the monthly, quarterly, and annual closing processes to ensure accuracy and timeliness.
  • Review and approve staff journal entries, account reconciliations, and ad-hoc submissions prepared by staff.
  • Prepare journal entries, account reconciliations, and variance analysis for a variety of locations.
  • Collaborate with the NetSuite support team to identify, communicate, and resolve data migration and data processing issues.
  • Oversee the closure of open purchase orders in NetSuite and the reclassification of vendor prepayments upon receipt of corresponding purchase orders.
  • Support in the weekly Accounts Payable review and payment processing of invoices.
  • Help review budget to actual variances analysis to provide explanations toward any fluctuations for a variety of locations.  
  • Develop and/or improve cross-functional workflows to improve operational and reporting efficiency.
  • Prepare standard operating procedure documentation for various accounting functions.
  • Manage and coach staff accountants in completing the monthly close process on a timeline basis, reviewing for accuracy.  
  • Complete ad hoc reporting tasks as needed.
  • Support in reviewing and identifying any issues regarding the cash application processes between NetSuite and Shopify POS to ensure completeness, accuracy, and timely posting of invoice related transactions.



Requirements

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field 
  • Minimum 8+ years of progressive accounting experience, including financial reporting and month-end close 
  • At least 2 years of extensive experience with NetSuite (particularly in purchase order management).
  • Experience with Shopify POS.
  • Must have at least 2 years of managerial experience.
  • Extensive knowledge of U.S. generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP) and significant experience in preparation of periodic financial reporting packages.
  • Experience in the management of teams including all aspects of coaching, mentoring and providing verbal and written feedback.
  • Prior experience in preparation and/or review of periodic journal entries, balance sheet reconciliations, accruals.
  • Detail oriented with strong organization skills.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to remain in a stationary position (sitting or standing) for extended periods while working at a computer 
  • Frequent use of hands and fingers to operate a computer, keyboard, and other office equipment 
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively in person, via phone, and video conferencing 
  • Occasionally move or lift office materials up to 15 pounds (e.g., files, boxes, or equipment) 
  • Ability to navigate an office environment and attend in-person meetings as required
