About the Role

Description

We are seeking an experienced Senior Estimator to lead our estimating function for complex aerospace and defense machining and sheet-metal projects. This role will build and develop a new Estimating Department and will eventually assume full quoting responsibilities currently handled by the General Manager.


The ideal candidate has extensive experience estimating for defense prime contractors, strong machine-shop knowledge, and the ability to interpret aerospace prints, models, and BOMs with precision. This position requires leadership, technical expertise, and the ability to create scalable estimating processes that support company growth.


Key Responsibilities


  Estimating & Quoting

  • Review RFQs, drawings, specifications, and customer requirements to fully understand project scope.
  • Develop detailed cost estimates including material, labor, machining time, tooling, outside processing, and subcontracted services.
  • Calculate accurate run times for CNC machining (3-axis, 4-axis, 5-axis, vertical, horizontal, and lathe) and sheet metal fabrication.
  • Prepare formal customer quotes within required deadlines.
  • Analyze historical data, market trends, and industry benchmarks to support pricing decisions.
  • Ensure all quotes meet ITAR, DFARS, and customer-specific requirements.

  Customer & Supplier Interaction

  • Serve as the primary estimating contact for customers.
  • Develop and maintain strong relationships with customers, vendors, and subcontractors.
  • Coordinate with Purchasing, Engineering, Production, and Quality to validate assumptions and ensure manufacturability.

  Department Leadership

  • Lead the creation of a new Estimating Department, including processes, templates, and workflows.
  • Train, mentor, and guide junior staff and future team members.
  • Manage daily tasks, prioritize RFQs, and support company growth initiatives.
  • Collaborate with executive leadership on pricing strategy, capacity planning, and long-term quoting strategy.

Requirements

  • 10+ years of aerospace/defense estimating experience, including CNC machining and sheet metal fabrication.
  • Direct experience quoting for defense prime contractors.
  • Strong understanding of machine shop operations, and manufacturing workflows.
  • Ability to read and interpret aerospace blueprints, models, GD&T, BOMs, and technical specifications.
  • Knowledge of outside processing (anodize, chem film, paint, NDT, heat treat, bonding, assembly).
  • Leadership experience, including mentoring or managing an estimating team.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and estimating or ERP/MRP systems.
  • Excellent organizational, analytical, and time-management skills.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • High attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment.
  • Understanding of supplier terms, conditions, and defense-industry compliance requirements.

Physical Demands

  • Work performed in a temperature-controlled office environment.
  • Ability to sit for extended periods.
  • Frequent bending, reaching, repetitive hand use, and lifting up to 10 lbs; occasional lifting up to 20 lbs.
  • Ability to walk the production floor and interact with machinists and fabricators.

ITAR Requirement

This position requires access to information subject to the International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR). Candidate must be a U.S. person (U.S. citizen, lawful permanent resident, or protected individual).

Salary

  • $115,000 - $155,000 per year
