About the Role

GENERAL SUMMARY 

The Laboratory Technician-Pathology is someone who assists a pathologist in testing samples and providing diagnoses or recommendations for medical treatment.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTION/COMPETENCIES

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Assisting a pathologist with testing and reviewing samples.
  • Working in medical laboratories, taking and examining specimens.
  • Preparing the laboratory, including setting up equipment, preparing samples and conducting research on them.
  • Performing diagnostic testing on patient specimens to aid in the detection, diagnosis, and treatment of disease.
  • Adhering to all safety protocols when handling hazardous materials.
  • Maintaining a clean and organized work area.
  • Preparing specimens for examination by pathologists.
  • Performing routine maintenance on equipment.
  • Keeping accurate records of test results.
  • Following established quality control procedures.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

CERTIFICATIONS, LICENSURES OR REGISTRY REQUIREMENTS

  • ASCP certification preferred and/or as mandated by state regulations.
  • Licensure and certifications as required by State.

KNOWLEDGE | SKILLS | ABILITIES

  • Provide accurate results which are crucial when working as a pathology technician.
  • Good mathematical skills are important in conducting research.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Strong working knowledge of CAP/CLIA regulations
  • Knowledge of medical terminology.
  • Knowledge in healthcare systems operations such as EMR.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to diagnose.
  • Ability to prepare and conduct experiments in a lab setting is necessary.
  • Ability to use medical devices like x-ray equipment to assist with diagnosis.
  • Ability to prepare and conduct experiments in a lab setting is necessary.
  • Ability to work independently and manage deadlines.
  • Complies with HIPAA regulations for patient confidentiality.
  • Complies with all health and safety policies of the organization.


Requirements

EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS

High School diploma or equivalent.

Bachelor’s degree in medical technology, clinical laboratory science, or related field preferred.


EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

Minimum of 2 years working as a pathology technician.
