Originally opened by Mt. Carmel Regional Medical Center as an extension of its mission, it is now a patient-owned and operated organization serving more than 50,000 children and adults annually. The Community Health Center of Southeast Kansas employs more than 700 professionals and support staff at 18 locations throughout Crawford, Cherokee, Labette, Linn, Montgomery, Allen and Bourbon counties, and Ottawa County in Oklahoma.  The Community Health Center of Southeast Kansas is governed by a 12-member Board of Directors which includes patients and community representatives. Medicare, Medicaid, KanCare and private insurance are accepted. Discounted rates for services are available for those meeting financial assistance guidelines. No-one is refused care due to inability to pay.

GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF POSITION

The Inspire Health Intern will gain hands-on experience within the CHC/SEK environment, supporting both programmatic and operational efforts that improve access to care and strengthen community health. This internship is designed to provide meaningful exposure to healthcare administration, data-informed decision-making, and community-based programming. 


Working alongside the Inspire Health team, the intern will contribute to projects that connect students and community members to healthcare learning experiences and resources while building professional skills in a collaborative, mission-driven setting.

Requirements

ESSENTIAL DUTIES

  1. Support coordination of student programs, events, and outreach activities, including preparation, logistics, and on-site assistance. A primary focus will be the Inspire Health Summer Camps offered throughout the month of July. 
  2. Assist with data collection, entry, and basic analysis to help evaluate programs and inform decision-making.
  3. Observe and support administrative functions within Inspire Health and CHC/SEK, gaining exposure to integrated models of care and health system operations.
  4. Contribute to projects related to healthcare workforce development, student engagement, access to care, and community partnerships.
  5. Assist with development of materials such as reports, communications, or presentations for internal and external audiences.
  6. Participate in team meetings, shadowing opportunities, and reflective learning activities to better understand healthcare systems and career pathways.

QUALIFICATIONS 

  1. Currently enrolled in an accredited college/university or recent graduate with a major or emphasis in Healthcare Administration, Education, Public Health, Family and Consumer Science or related field. Must have successfully completed at least 1 semester. 
  2. Must be in good standing as a student or successfully earned degree. Proof of good standing or degree is required. 
  3. Experience in working with students of all ages, planning and overseeing events, creating and presenting presentations preferred. 
  4. Must possess a valid driver’s license, as travel may be required. Must maintain driving standards- no more than 2 minor or 1 major driving violations within a 3-year lookback period. 


KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  1. Social and cultural sensitivity appropriate to ethnically and economically diverse patient-and employee-base.
  2. Communicates through appropriate channels. Use proper chain of command.
  3. Ability to handle emergency situations calmly and effectively.
  4. Must be computer literate, especially with Microsoft Office products and be able to use the Internet.
  5. Must be able to maintain good inter-personal relationship with co-workers and other members of the team and the organization.
  6. Provide customer service in accordance to the organization’s mission.
  7. Be courteous and respectful when interacting with patients and family members.
  8. Maintain confidentiality in accordance to organization’s policy and procedures.
  9. Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions and decimals.
  10. Strong organizational skills and ability to multitask in a fast-paced, high demand environment. 
  11. Ability to establish and maintain positive relationships with students, educators, and employees.
  12. Ability to communicate with and present to all ages Pre-K to Adult.


WORKING CONDITIONS

While performing the duties of this Job, the employee is regularly required to sit up to entire shift; use hands and fingers to operate computer keyboard, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms and talk or hear. The employee is occasionally required to stand. During IHF events, long periods of standing, walking, bending, and stooping is required. The employee may occasionally lift and/or move up to 40 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus. Computer work is frequent. Good lighting and comfortable temperature of ventilation at all times. Driving to and from clinics may be required.
