Be a proactive member of the operations team at Center on Halsted (COH), the largest Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Queer (LGBTQ) community center in the Midwest. Ensure smooth daily operations, events, and meetings, addressing and communicating potential issues, especially infrastructure concerns. Provide coverage for first-floor reception during lunch breaks and when extra support is needed. Assist with event setup, including arranging furniture, moving gym equipment, checking out equipment, and setting up AV systems. Respond to emergencies and manage challenging clients. Demonstrate cultural competency at all times. Collaborate with staff to ensure program success. Oversee and provide feedback to contracted cleaning and security teams. Complete assigned tasks promptly, prioritize projects, and handle necessary paperwork. Ability to work independently and respond to overnight building alarm calls required. Building Maintenance and Routine Duties: - Independently move volleyball poles and nets, move pickleball nets, raise and lower basketball hoops, and relocate gym equipment accessories at least twice during each shift. This involves heavy lifting, bending, and carrying.
- Regularly check public spaces and ensure a neat environment; unlock doors as needed for meetings; report any building problems; and, send daily report.
- Complete assigned shift checklists and other assigned projects.
- Setup and/or cleanup for scheduled meetings, events and programs. Duties can include delivering refreshments and food, arranging furniture, handling AV equipment; general cleaning, reviewing inventory, inspecting spaces for damage, and organizing spaces.
- Learn and demonstrate how to use AV equipment, theatre equipment, gym equipment, and technology including laptops and other building equipment. The ability to work independently is essential. Train COH staff as needed.
- Work as receptionist during staff breaks or for a shift when coverage is needed, helping to answer calls, director patrons and clients, clean up the lobby, help with wayfinding, and provide resources to patrons as needed
Communication Duties: - Maintain positive communications with all.
- As needed, provide assistance to staff and renters and prioritize needs.
- Communicate relevant problems, particularly infrastructural problems, to other operational staff (such communication will include sending effective emails and by noting them on a “punch list”); as appropriate, take corrective actions to address problems.
Duties Related to Responding to Critical Incidents: - Center on Halsted is a trauma informed organization that provides services to clients with, at times, severe behavior and impulse control issues. Applicants must be able to create healthy boundaries and work with patrons who have experienced severe trauma.
- As they occur, respond to hostile clients and/or other emergencies; help to de-escalate clients and patrons when possible.
