About the Role

Overview

Retina Consultants of Texas (RCTX) is seeking an Ophthalmic Techncian to join our innovative team with the mission of Fighting Blindness For The World To See. This position will be responsible for providing accurate documentation, summarization of patient’s medical history, and performing preliminary ocular examination.  The Technician is responsible for maintaining patient flow and communication regarding appointment status to patients and Clinic Managers in our Spurs Lane Clinic.

 

Candidates must be able to travel to other clinics in the northern part of San Antonio, TX, but will be based out of the Schertz, TX clinic primarily. to meet the needs of the patients and providers, and support the Clinic hours of Monday through Friday between the hours of 6:30am-6:30pm (some later evening during the week may be required). Schedules are provided weekly and are based on the provider's clinic, patient and surgery schedules. Clinic staff are provided with the opportunity for weekend hours if available.

Pay Rate is $17.00+ per hour and eligible for overtime

Responsibilities

  • Obtains patient history to include chief complaint, history of present illness, patient and family history of both ocular and general illnesses, history of allergies, and current medications.
  • Accurately performs and documents visual acuity, confrontational visual fields, evaluation of motility, pupillary function tests, dilation, and ocular tonometry.
  • Provide compassionate patient care throughout the clinic flow
  • Performing opening and closing duties; inventory count, prepping drugs as needed, sterile instruments.
  • Maintains cleanliness in exam and procedure rooms.
  • Maintains back up levels of supply stock in exam and procedure rooms.
  • Provides back-up to the ophthalmic photographer performing OCT’s
  • Contacts patients who have no showed to appointments and reschedule as needed. 
  • Maintains a smooth flow of patients to the physician, altering the test sequence as needed.
  • Troubleshoots equipment as necessary; projector, tonopen, autoclave.
  • Occasionally assists physician with laser procedures, injections, and minor procedures.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Skills/Competencies:

  • Ability to perform comprehensive work ups
  • Ability to educate patients regarding instillation of eye drops and other instructions related to physician’s treatment plan.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Strong organization with attention to detail and ability to multitask.
  • Ability to work as a team member.
  • Ability to use multiple computer systems
  • Training and understanding of HIPAA requirements .

 

Education Requirements

  • High school diploma required; some college preferred.

 

Experience Requirements:

  • One to Two years’ experience ophthalmic assistant preferred
  • Certification as an ophthalmic assistant preferred
  • Valid CPR certification required

 

Physical Abilities:

  • Must be able to move frequently from standing and sitting depending on exam room configuration during clinic sessions.
  • Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
  • Must be able to type or write legibly in a dimly-lit setting.
  • Must be able to hear softly spoken words.
  • Must be able to add support for patients getting in and out of exam chairs.
  • Lifting required up to 50 pounds.
