JOB SUMMARY
Under the general direction of the Director of Radiology, the Mammographer is responsible for competently performing routine and specialized breast procedures to produce quality images to physicians and other health care providers for the diagnosis, treatment, monitoring, and prevention of injury or disease. Works independently, exercising sound judgment, and develops clinical skills to execute safe and precise procedures to deliver accurate results in a timely manner. Gains confidence and cooperation from the patient, their family/support group, and other healthcare providers through competent patient assessment, attentive monitoring, and effective communication. Adheres to all local/state/federal regulations, codes, JCT, policies, and procedures to ensure privacy and safety while delivering optimal patient care.
STANDARDS OF PERFORMANCE
Mammography and Imaging Competencies
- Demonstrate competence in performing both screening and diagnostic mammography procedures, ensuring high-quality imaging and patient care.
- Exhibit proficiency in implant imaging, producing clear and accurate results for patients with implants.
- Perform bone density scans with accuracy and attention to detail to assist in patient diagnosis and treatment planning.
- Carry out stereotactic and tomosynthesis breast biopsies effectively, utilizing appropriate protocols and maintaining patient comfort.
Patient Data and Image Management
- Burn mammography discs for patients and outside facilities as required, ensuring delivery of necessary imaging for continued care.
- Retrieve, send, and delete studies from the Hologic manager system efficiently and securely, maintaining proper data management.
- Perform routine quality controls on the mammography unit on a weekly, monthly, quarterly, and semi-annual basis to ensure optimal performance and compliance with standards.
- Utilize the mammography tracking system (Magview) effectively for managing mammography patient information and follow-up.
- Track, print, and mail mammography result notification letters to patients, ensuring timely communication of results.
- Track, print, and mail mammography recall letters as necessary for patient follow-up and continued care.
- Enter mammography BI-RADS reports in Magview accurately and promptly.
- Take responsibility for notifying ordering providers of biopsy results, ensuring prompt and clear communication.
- Track, order, and scan pathology results into the electronic medical record (EMR) for comprehensive patient records.
- Request prior images and reports from outside mammography facilities, ensuring a complete diagnostic history for each patient.
- Load mammography discs into the PACS system for digital storage and access by the care team.
- Scan mammography reports into the Ginkgo system and upload them into PACS, maintaining accurate and accessible patient records.
- Maintain adequate supplies for the mammography department, ensuring all necessary materials are available for daily operations.
Administrative and Compliance Responsibilities
- Attend organizational and departmental orientation upon employment and complete annual health and policy updates as required by organizational guidelines.
- Ensure adherence to proper infection control, OSHA, and safety standards at all times within the department.
- Comply with established safety precautions to maintain a safe environment for patients and staff.
- Participate in discharge planning, development, and implementation of patient care plans and patient assessments as necessary.
- Complete administrative requirements as directed, including necessary forms, reports, and data input.
- Ensure the safety and comfort of patients during transport to and from the Radiology Department.
- Coordinate radiology exams with other departments to facilitate comprehensive patient care.
- Perform radiology exams in the patient’s room, emergency department, or operating room as needed to meet patient needs.
- Brief patients or their families on the procedures involved in radiology exams and prepare the necessary equipment for each procedure.
- Maintain a current file of patients treated on both an inpatient and outpatient basis.
- Serve as a receptionist for patients visiting the Radiology Department, providing a welcoming and helpful environment.
- Maintain treatment records, patient files, and progress notes as required for accurate record keeping.
- Recommend equipment and supply needs to the Radiology Manager to ensure efficient department operations.
- Ensure the Business Office receives charges for radiology exams rendered to patients in a timely manner.
- Maintain the department in a clean and safe manner, prioritizing patient comfort and convenience.
- Reassure patients before and during radiology exams to reduce anxiety and promote cooperation.
- Prepare patients for exams by assisting with dressing and positioning, and conduct radiology exams in accordance with established policies and procedures.
- Produce radiographs by properly positioning patients and utilizing automatic film processing techniques.
- Assist in the distribution of transcribed radiology reports as needed.
- Serve as a preceptor for new team members, providing training and support as they integrate into the department.
- Participate in patient education, including educating family members when appropriate to support ongoing care.
- Engage in continuing education activities to maintain and enhance professional skills and knowledge.
- Perform other duties as assigned, needed, or required to support the operations of the Radiology Department.
Requirements
Minimum Level of Education: Education level equivalent to completion of high school and completion of an accredited radiologic technology program.
Formal Training: Possesses the knowledge and technical proficiency to properly and safely obtain high-quality diagnostic imaging studies, requiring the application of independent judgment, ingenuity, and initiative in the utilization of imaging equipment for the diagnosis and/or treatment of disease. Demonstrates a strong understanding of imaging principles, patient safety, and quality standards to ensure accurate and reliable diagnostic results. Exhibits excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to effectively interact with patients, physicians, and multidisciplinary healthcare teams. Demonstrates a high level of problem-solving ability and critical thinking skills in both routine and non-routine clinical situations. Capable of working independently with minimal supervision while also contributing effectively as a collaborative member of the healthcare team.
Licensure, Certification, Registration: Must have and maintain current unencumbered membership with the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists, and current BLS CPR Certification in accordance with the American Heart Association.
Work Experience: Minimum 1 year of experience in mammography or breast imaging. Experience with 3-D mammography and advanced imaging techniques preferred.
