The Physical Education Teacher is responsible to develop in each pupil an understanding of the relationship of good body function and exercise; to motivate each pupil to cultivate physical fitness, hygienic habits, and good social and emotional adjustment; to discover and develop talents of pupils in physical achievement; to develop strength, skill, agility, poise, and coordination in individual, dual, and team physical activities and sports, in accordance with each pupil’s ability.
Teaching Responsibilities
- Teaches knowledge and skills in physical fitness and health education in individual or team sports.
- Instructs pupils with age-appropriate learning activities and basic subject matter.
- Analyzes, demonstrates, and explains basic skills, knowledge, and strategies of formal sports, games rhythms, and fundamentals of body movement.
- Provides appropriate safety instruction and makes safety checks on equipment and field areas to ensure the overall safety of pupils.
- Establishes and maintains standards of pupil behavior needed to provide an orderly, productive environment in the physical education areas.
- Observe, monitor, and evaluate each pupil’s growth in physical skills, knowledge, and teamwork per California PE standards in gradebook.
- Organizes equipment and maintain required inventory records.
- Communicates with parents (as needed) and classroom teachers on pupil progress.
- Friendly and professional team player.
- Performs other duties as assigned by principal.
Administrative/ Other Responsibilities
- Return voice-mail/e-mail messages in a timely manner
- Communicate regularly with parents, as needed
- Maintain a neat and orderly PE shed.
- Demonstrate a respectful demeanor with staff, students, and parents
- Observe utmost confidentiality regarding parent, student, staff information/conversations
- Supervise playground and other areas of duty as the role may require
- Other duties as assigned
Requirements
Religious Qualifications
- Active, practicing Roman Catholic (preferred)
- Respects and understands a Catholic school philosophy
Professional Qualifications:
- Possess a Bachelor’s Degree
- Clear criminal background check (a clear Livescan for the Diocese of San Diego is a condition of employment)
- Experience teaching in an elementary school classroom or similar experience
- Positive professional references and recommendations
Physical Requirements:
To successfully meet the needs of the students in his/her care, the teacher must:
- Models a healthy lifestyle and personal physical fitness
- Position requires a high level of energy and ability to move from a sitting to standing position frequently
- Must be able to explain and demonstrate fundamental motor skills and patterns for movement skills such as running, hopping, jumping, galloping, twisting, turning, or bending
- Must be able to bend, stoop, and reach and must have mobility of arms and dexterity of hands
- Must be able to stand for long periods of time
- Must be able to walk and jog long distances as needed
- Be able to move quickly from one place to another to ensure safety
- Can lift 30 pounds and is able to work indoors and outdoors
- Must be able to supervise students by sight and sound
- Must have the physical ability to lead sports and games
- Possess the physical stamina and skills in specific coaching areas
While performing the duties of this job the employee is regularly required to be inside the classroom. The employee is required to be mobile to, from, and within the classroom and preschool environment, as well as maneuver throughout the school facility to attend meetings, trainings, and other work-related events.
