About the Role

Company Description

At CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, physicists and engineers are probing the fundamental structure of the universe. Using the world's largest and most complex scientific instruments, they study the basic constituents of matter - fundamental particles that are made to collide together at close to the speed of light. The process gives physicists clues about how particles interact, and provides insights into the fundamental laws of nature.

Job Description

Introduction:

As an Electrical Engineer, you will take a leading role in the major CMS electrical infrastructure activities during the upcoming upgrade of the detector. You will interface with the CERN electrical infrastructure team in charge of the project execution to refine the specifications according to the CMS needs, validate the technical solutions and coordinate their implementation.

Within the CMS Technical Coordination team, you will supervise the power distribution cabling activities for the CMS sub-detectors. You will also participate in the safety assessment of all electrical activities, including the lock-down and the re-powering of all systems, from low-voltage to high-voltage detector systems.

Functions:

  • Oversee the activities related to the evolution of the electrical network in CMS surface and underground areas, providing the interface to the contractors and support groups operating on site.
  • Report to Technical Coordination on the scheduling of activities, co-activity requirements, work progress, and risks.
  • Coordinate the CMS subdetector’s effort in procurement, connectorisation, and installation of all power systems and cables, working in close collaboration with the CMS lead electrical engineer and the cabling coordinator.
  • Establish QA/QC procedures for commissioning and acceptance of electrical installations, and document test execution.
  • Supervise site activities carried out by contractors and/or collaboration personnel, ensuring proper documentation.
  • Support the CMS detector team in re-powering and readiness for operation.

Qualifications

Master's Degree or equivalent relevant experience in the field of Electrical Engineering or a related field.

Experience:

  • Established experience in the design and sizing of low-voltage power distribution systems.
  • Hands-on experience with the installation, commissioning, and troubleshooting of complex power distribution systems.
  • Proficient in the use of electrical measurement and diagnostic instruments.
  • Solid understanding of electrical schematics and cabling documentation, with the ability to produce high-quality documentation using electrical design software.
  • Knowledge of power distribution equipment and high-reliability connection principles.
  • Experience in organising teamwork, working within multidisciplinary teams and ensuring safety in the workplace.

Technical competencies:

  • Construction, test and commissioning of electrical circuits and networks.
  • Operation and maintenance of electrical circuits and networks.
  • Construction, test and installation of power electronic components and systems.
  • Knowledge and application of electromagnetic compatibility, interference and susceptibility.
  • Electrical safety and risk management.

Behavioural competencies:

  • Working in Teams: supporting and acting in accordance with team decisions; accepting joint responsibility for team successes and shortcomings.
  • Solving Problems: assimilating large quantities of information, identifying key issues and formulating conclusions clearly and concisely.
  • Demonstrating Flexibility: adapting quickly and resourcefully to shifting priorities and requirements.
  • Communicating Effectively: ensuring that information, procedures and decisions are appropriately documented.
